11 from '11: The Top 11 Infiniti Stories from 2011

Infiniti_logo
1- Infiniti Embarks on a QX-Inspired Boat Project
The Infiniti QX56 full-size luxury SUV might be best known for its leather-trimmed, 7-passenger interior and technological advances like the world’s first Around View™ Monitor, but its real claim to fame could be its powerful, 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 engine and 8,500-pound towing capacity. Now, in a unique twist on putting the cart before the horse, Infiniti has embarked on a one-off project to add QX power to what’s being towed – a boat modified around a QX engine and designed with the luxury, performance and craftsmanship of its flagship SUV.

2- Infiniti and F1 Racing, Vettel are World Champions
Infiniti Global Brand Ambassador Sebastian Vettel underlined his reputation as a true master of Inspired Performance by winning the 2011 Formula One World Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix.

3- Infiniti JX is Born
After the concept version debuted in Pebble Beach, the full prodcution version of the 2013 Infiniti JX was shown at the LA Auto Show. As a fresh, bold alternative to the many flavors of vanilla currently dominating the luxury crossover segment, the all-new Infiniti JX is designed to excel in the areas that luxury crossover buyers desire most – interior flexibility and roominess, safety, and advanced hospitality features.

4- Infiniti Poised for ZEV Growth
A highly advanced, range-extending electric sports car concept is under development at Infiniti. Set to emerge at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012, this vehicle is being created to extend the potential for high performance, low emission electric cars. Explaining the strategy behind the concept, Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and Infiniti said: "At the Geneva Show next year, we will present our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car. Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. And with an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect.”

5-
Infiniti M Hybrid Launches in Style
Infiniti announced its first high performance hybrid in bold style. In an ad campaign that challenged the conventional notion of what a hybrid can be, Infiniti took viewers on a journey through the history of hybrids, starting over 100 years ago with the invention of the first hybrid car in 1888, to the hybrid patent in 1909, through the hybrids of the ‘70s and on to hybrids today – directly challenging the notion that you can’t have great performance and great fuel economy.

6- IPL G Convertible is the Second Model to Focus on “Total Vehicle Performance”
The 2013 IPL G Convertible became the second member of the Infiniti Performance Line of premium performance vehicles. The IPL G Convertible features special aerodynamic styling pieces, the dynamic performance of an IPL-tuned V6, exhaust and suspension, 19-inch IPL aluminum-alloy wheels, and unique leather-appointed interior.

7-
Infiniti ETHEREA Projects “Evoloving Infiniti Identity”
The Infiniti ETHEREA made its world debut at the 81st International Geneva Motor Show. “ETHEREA is about a new type of luxury for younger buyers,” said Toru Saito, Corporate Vice President and leader of the Global Infiniti Business Unit. “It is not just a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car.”

8- New Global HQ in Hong Kong Foreshadows Infiniti’s Growth Around the World
Infiniti will locate its new global headquarters in Hong Kong. The move comes as Infiniti seeks to lift total global sales to 500,000 vehicles a year. Infiniti's growth strategy is expected to be driven partly by demand in China and other fast-growing Asian markets, which can be served more effectively by consolidating Infiniti’s global downstream functions in Hong Kong.

9-
Battle on the Nordschleife
Red Bull Racing drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber took each other on racing around the famous Nordschleife circuit in high performance Infiniti road cars. The team mates were given the keys to a 3.7-liter V6 Infiniti M37s and an Infiniti M35h – Infiniti’s most powerful car to date and the fastest accelerating production hybrid in the world. They competed for one high-speed lap around the legendary 14-mile track demonstrating truly Inspired Performance.

10- Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version
The Infiniti FX designed for Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. What began as a chat between the Red Bull Racing driver and Infiniti’s Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura is Infiniti’s fastest car yet and, probably, the most exclusive crossover ever made.

11- Infiniti M Hybrid’s Direct Response Hybrid 3.5-liter V6 Named to Prestigious “Ward’s 10 Best Engines” List

There are hybrids and then there are hybrids. The sole hybrid powerplant to be honored by WardsAuto.com and WardsAuto World magazine in their 2012 “10 Best Engines” list happens to be the one that challenges conventional wisdom about the compatibility of performance and fuel economy – the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid’s innovative 3.5-liter V6 with Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system. “The Infiniti M hybrid is pure exhilaration in a world of uninspired hybrids, delivering the power of a luxury V8 engine with the fuel economy of a 4-cylinder,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore.

Infiniti JX on track for spring start

2013_infiniti_jx_photo

Infiniti introduced the production version of its all-new, seven-passenger 2013 JX crossover utility vehicle at the recent Los Angeles auto show, and announced it will go on sale in the spring with a starting price of $40,450 (plus freight).

The JX, which will be the first Infiniti vehicle produced at Nissan’s factory near Nashville, Tenn., will come in two versions: the JX35 FWD (front-wheel drive) model and the JX35 AWD (all-wheel drive), which will begin at $41,550.

This is the first three-row crossover from Infiniti, and the first for the Nissan Corp. But so far, there have been no plans announced to have a Nissan-branded version of it.

There are no other Infiniti products that share architecture with Nissan models since the redesigned QX56 SUV came to market for 2010. Previously, that vehicle was a fancy version of the Nissan Armada full-size, truck-based sport utility and was assembled along with the Armada at Nissan’s plant in Canton, Miss.

But with the redesign, the QX56 moved to a new chassis, and production was moved to Japan.

Like the JX, the QX56 has three rows of seats and a large cargo area, but the similarities end there. The JX has unibody construction, like a car. It will be the roomiest luxury crossover on the market, Nissan said.

Nissan rolled out a concept version of the JX model at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance luxury car show in California in August, then followed with the production version in Los Angeles in late November. The two were substantially the same, though.

“The three-row luxury crossover segment is one of the fastest-growing among all luxury vehicle segments, providing a huge opportunity for Infiniti,” said Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas.

In the Infiniti U.S. lineup, the JX will fall between the midsized, five-passenger FX crossover and the larger QX56. FX prices for 2012 range from $43,450 (plus $895 freight) for the FX35 with front drive to $59,350 for the FX50 with all-wheel drive. The QX56 begins at $58,700.

There is a compact, five-passenger Infiniti crossover as well, the EX35. Prices for it range from $35,600 to 39,300 (plus $895 freight).

Under the hood of the JX will be a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 265 horsepower and 248 foot-pounds of torque. It will be connection to a sport-tuned continuously variable automatic transmission — the first Infiniti to get this gearless style of transmission.

Nissan says fuel-economy ratings are expected to be 17 mpg city/23 highway, with a “real world” combined rating of 19 mpg.

The engine is a version of Nissan’s VQ series six-cylinder. In the FX35, a variant of this engine has 303 horsepower; in the EX35, it has 297 horsepower. Both of those vehicles use a conventional seven-speed automatic transmission, however.

In developing the JX, Nissan said three elements were emphasized: interior flexibility and roominess, safety and “innovative hospitality features.”

The exterior was given a “dramatic” look to help differentiate the JX from other premium crossovers, such as the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Acura MDX and Audi Q7, the company said.

The JX will have a second-row seat that tilts and slides forward to allow for easy access to the third row. A child seat latched to the second row won’t have to be removed to get in or out of the third, Nissan said.

Passengers in the third row will have “adult-sized room,” and the middle seat will be able to slide forward or backward up to 51/2 inches.

Available features will include a 15-speaker Bose Cabin Surround sound system with Acoustic Waveguide bass technology.

Also offered will be the Infiniti Connection Telematics system, similar to GM’s OnStar, which can automatically synch a computer business calendar and provide navigation guidance to appointments.

The system also includes the Infiniti Personal Assistant, which provides a personal concierge service with 24-hour access to live operators, Nissan said. This feature already is offered at no additional cost on every 2012 Infiniti vehicle.

In addition, the JX will be available with Backup Collision Intervention, designed to detect objects that are crossing behind the vehicle when the transmission is in reverse, and then to automatically apply the brakes to help avoid a collision.

Other available safety features include intelligent brake assist with forward-collision warning, a lane-departure warning and correction system, blind-spot monitoring and the Infiniti Around View Monitor with moving-object detection.

Standard will be 18-inch, split five-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/65R18 T-rated all-season tires. Optional will be 20-inch, split five-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/55R20 H-rated all-season tires or polished 20-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels.

A Premium Package adds the Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with 8-inch color touch-screen display, Infiniti Voice Recognition, XM NavTraffic/NavWeather, the Zagat restaurant guide, streaming audio through Bluetooth, and a Bose 13-speaker sound system with Acoustic Waveguide bass

Also included in the Premium Package are a memory system for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors; entry/exit assist for driver’s seat and steering wheel; an enhanced Intelligent Key system; outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down feature; maple interior accents; and a self-dimming mirror with universal garage opener.

The Deluxe Touring Package brings the Bose Cabin Surround system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and Acoustic Waveguide bass, the 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/55R20 tires, a panoramic moon roof with power rear sunshade, an advanced climate system with auto recirculation and air purifier, heated and cooled front seats, and heated second-row outboard seats.

For the rear passengers, there will be an optional Theater Package that adds a DVD player with dual 7-inch color monitors, two sets of wireless headphones, remote control, auxiliary audio/video input jacks, 120-volt power outlet and rear headphone jacks with volume control.

The Driver Assistance Package tacks on the Backup Collision Intervention, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Brake Assist, Blind Spot Warning, Distance Control Assistance (DCA), Active Trace Control, an Eco Pedal (gives the driver feedback when applying too much pressure to the accelerator), heated steering wheel and remote engine start.

A Technology Package includes the features of the Driver Assistance Package, along with the Lane Departure Warning/Prevention system, Blind Spot Intervention system and front seatbelts that lock up if a crash is determined to be coming.

Nissan is working on expansion of its plant in Tennessee to accommodate production of the JX, as well as two other new vehicles the complex will get over the next two years: the Nissan Rogue compact crossover and the Nissan Leaf electric car.

The company already builds the Altima sedan and coupe, Maxima sedan, Frontier pickup, Xterra and Pathfinder sport utility vehicles, and the Suzuki Equator pickup at the Smyrna plant.

Also under construction at the site is a $1 billion plant to make lithium-ion battery packs for the Leaf.

Infiniti 2013 JX Crossover Offers 3-Rows of Luxury

2013_infiniti_jx_photo

As promised, Infiniti has unveiled its entry into the three-row luxury crossover segment today at the LA Auto Show with the new JX. With the official reveal of the JX, Infiniti has also announced its pricing, setting the JX35 FWD MSRP at $40,450 while the AWD will come in at $41,550. Both vehicles are powered by a 3.5L V6 engine with 265-hp mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Sport mode.

The Infiniti JX will be on sale at Infiniti retailers nationwide in spring 2012. Blending both luxury and style with Infiniti’s new design language direction, the JX offers superb legroom in all three rows with plenty of cargo space behind the third row. Infiniti engineers also designed an innovative entry to the third row without having to remove the second row child seat.

The JX will also feature Infiniti’s newest technology, Backup Collision Intervention (BCI) which will allow the JX to help the driver detect crossing vehicles and objects behind the JX when the transmission is in reverse. The system will even engage the car’s brakes if necessary to help avoid a collision.

As with any other Infiniti, a bevy of options were also announced with the JX: Premium Package ($4,950), Driver Assistance Package ($2,200), Theater Package ($1,700), Deluxe Touring Package ($2,550), Technology Package ($3,100), Roof Rails ($370) and polished 20-inch forged wheels ($1,600).

One of the newest features of the Premium Package that is worth mentioning is Infiniti Connection, which can automatically sync the owner’s schedule through Google Calendar and provide navigation to those appointments. In addition, the system will allow the driver to setup Drive Zone and Speed Alerts, among other multiple functions.

Infiniti EX35 remains a best-seller

2012_infiniti_ex35_photo

Infiniti's EX35 compact luxury crossover returns for 2012 with a starting price of $35,600 (plus $895 freight) for the base rear-wheel-drive model and $37,000 for that model with all-wheel drive.

The premium-level Journey model begins at $37,900 with rear-wheel drive and lists for $39,300 with all-wheel drive.

A universal garage/gate opener has been added as standard equipment on the Journey models for 2012, a feature that previously was available only as part of the Deluxe Touring Package.

Introduced for the 2008 model year, the five-passenger EX35 is Infiniti's entry-level crossover — and also is one of the brand's best-selling models. Above it in the lineup are the five-passenger midsize FX35 and FX50, and the eight-passenger full-size QX56.

The EX offers sporty performance in a car-based chassis that has SUV-style seating and cargo-carrying capability.

Built on the same architecture as the Infiniti G sedan, the EX35 competes in a crowded class of vehicles that includes the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Cadillac SRX, Land Rover LR2 and Audi Q5. It also goes up against sedans in the entry-premium segment.

It's essentially a smaller version of the FX crossover and has essentially the same engine as the FX35, the V-6 model. Starting price is about $7,000 less, however. The EX does not offer a V-8 engine, though, like the FX50 model has.

Standard on the EX are leather seats, a rearview camera, automatic climate control (with rear vents), cruise control, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, power windows/mirrors/door locks, remote keyless entry with keyless push-button start, polished aluminum roof rails, heated outside mirrors, automatic headlights and a USB port for iPods.

The all-wheel-drive models have heated front seats.

It's powered by the same engine used in the earlier G35 sedans, a 297-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6. EPA ratings are 17 mpg city/24 highway with rear-wheel drive and 16/23 with all-wheel drive.

Unlike many of its competitors, the EX has standard rear-wheel drive that helps give it a sporty driving experience. It's also the only vehicle in its segment with a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is useful in snow and rain, but it helps guide the car through curves on dry pavement, as well. But it's not intended for serious off-road driving.

Last year, the EX35 was upgraded with a new seven-speed automatic transmission and the 18-inch wheels, and more high-tech equipment was made available. Dual-zone automatic climate control also became standard, and there is now an option for 19-inch wheels and tires.

Also last year, the instrument-panel lighting was changed to white, and three exterior colors were added: Arctic Blue, Midnight Garnet and Graphite Shadow.

The EX35 earned the “Top Safety Pick” designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, getting the top score, “Good,” in separate front-, rear- and side-impact and roof-strength tests conducted by the institute.

Standard safety features on the EX35 include electronic stability control with traction control, dual-stage/dual-threshold front air bags with seatbelt and occupant-classification sensors, roof-mounted side-curtain air bags for both rows of seats, front seat-mounted driver and passenger side-impact air bags, and front-seat active head restraints.

It also comes with rear child-seat anchors and tethers, tire-pressure monitoring and four-wheel antilock disc brakes.

There is a long list of optional safety equipment as well, although the Top Safety Pick designation was not based on any of these extra-cost features. Those include the Infiniti lane-departure-prevention system, intelligent cruise control, distance-control assist and intelligent brake assist with forward collision warning.

Another option is a blind-spot warning system, which signals the driver with a light if another vehicle is detected in the blind-spot area on either side of the car.

If the driver activates the turn signal with another vehicle in the blind spot, the indicator flashes and a warning tone sounds, as well.

The blind-spot warning system is included in the Technology Package ($2,700), which also brings the lane-departure warning and prevention system, intelligent cruise control with distance-control assist, and intelligent brake assist with forward-collision warning.

A Premium Package ($2,700) adds a navigation system and Bose audio system, along with the cool Around View Monitor, which gives the driver a bird's-eye view of the car on the navigation screen.

It's a great help when trying to park or maneuver in tight spaces. The system has four cameras — in the grille, on the rear above the license plate and on the side mirrors — producing a view similar to looking down on the car from above.

Also available is the Deluxe Touring Package ($2,200), which adds the 19-inch wheels; P245/45R19 all-season performance tires; adaptive, auto-leveling, high-intensity-discharge xenon headlights; dual-occupant memory system for the driver's seat, outside mirrors and steering wheel; entry/exit assist for the driver's seat and steering wheel; outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down feature; two-way power driver's seat lumbar support; a coat hanger on the driver's seat head rest; eight-way power passenger's seat; and a power folding second-row seat.

Versions with the Bose premium audio system and without the navigation system have a 2-gigabyte hard drive for onboard music storage.

The lane-departure prevention system, which goes beyond the lane-departure warning systems on some other luxury vehicles, detects the vehicle drifting out of its traffic lane, then engages the brakes slightly to give the car a gentle push back into its lane.

The EX also has Infiniti's Scratch Shield exterior paint, which self-heals small scratches — such as those from fingernails under the door handles. The process can take from a day to a week, depending on the outside temperature and the depth of the scratch.

This is possible because of a special soft elastic resin in the clearcoat paint. It can't fix severe scratches, though.

Vettel-Inspired Infiniti FX Concept Bound for Production

Infiniti_fx_concept_photo
The Infiniti FX50 Performance Concept  inspired by F1 world champ Sebastian Vettel is bound for production, Infiniti announced on Tuesday. The concept was introduced last month at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show .

Details of the production version, including pricing and launch date, have not been revealed.

"Doing the FX Sebastian Vettel version for Frankfurt was fun, but it's also kind of a pilot," said Andy Palmer, Infiniti executive vice president, in a statement. "It's about our equivalent of Mercedes-Benz AMG or BMW M Cars. We wanted to test the organization and see if it could cope with this type of special version.

"Sebastian's FX demonstrates we are able to do low-volume specials, and the FX Sebastian Vettel version is one of the first that will go to market."

The concept is equipped with a 414-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine and a high-downforce aerodynamics package developed by Infiniti in collaboration with Red Bull Racing. Infiniti is a sponsor of Vettel's Red Bull F1 racecar.

The production announcement comes on the heels of Vettel winning Sunday's Korean Grand Prix and clinching the constructors championship for Team Red Bull.

Infiniti said Vettel had a hand in designing the concept following a conversation with Infiniti Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show.

Ken and Sean, we would like to thank you for your dedication to 100 percent customer satisfaction. Outstanding job.

"Great sales experience. My wife and I got to the dealership late last night, test drove and finally purchased a used car. The salesman, Ken, and his sales manager Sean were fantastic, helpful, patient, informative and kind throughout the whole process. You could say, \"of course they were, they were making a sale\", but I\'ve had awful experiences elsewhere of pushy sales people and had none of that here. We were able to quickly come to an amenable agreement and wrapped things up as fast as it took to sign the paperwork. And none of that pushy, after agreement, bull*$&# from the finance person either - she focused on what we agreed upon, offered other items politely and did not try to oversell or detract from finishing things up. I hope the general manager understands this is a good thing as we will certainly recommend Parkway Infiniti to all our friends! "

2012 Infiniti M Hybrid reaches a new level of excellence

2012_infiniti_m_hybrid_photo
When we heard that Infiniti’s M Hybrid had been certified by the folks at Guinness – the measuring Guinness, not the drinking Guinness – as the world’s fastest hybrid, our interest was piqued.

Hybrids have become a part of the automotive landscape for nearly 15 years, but they’re generally the kind of vehicles we hate getting stuck behind on the highway. Insert your own Prius driver joke here.

But the M Hybrid, Infiniti’s first such vehicle, looks to change all that.

What is it?
Actually, the M Hybrid is Nissan’s first stab at developing its own hybrid system and it’s a far cry from the slow-selling, limited market Altima Hybrid the automaker offered until last year. Alternatively referred to as both M Hybrid and M35h, the car’s identity seems to be a little confused – but its mission in life is clear: To bridge a gap between M37 and M56 and to expand Infiniti’s efforts to move upmarket away from a primarily G-focused lineup.

Visually identical to the M37 and M56 that have been on sale for a little over a year, the M Hybrid promises V8-like power with V6-like fuel economy. It’s a promise that has been made by more than one automaker, but, as Guinness has proven, the M Hybrid has the stats to back up its claims. And at 27/32 mpg, it isn’t a big guzzler at the pumps – at least by class standards.

Any breakthroughs?
The M’s shapely hood hides an Atkinson cycle 3.5-liter V6 mated to an electric motor installed in parallel between the engine and transmission that, when combined, crank out 360 net horsepower. More importantly, the gas engine puts out 258 lb-ft. of torque, while the electric motor adds 199 lb-ft.

Instead of the high-strung continuously variable transmissions so many automakers love to use with hybrids, the M features a sophisticated seven-speed unit.

Add in “normal” hybrid do-dads like a lithium ion battery, regenerative brakes and some aerodynamics-enhancing underbody work. Our tester was equipped with an additional $2,000 package that brought with it a unique bodykit designed to displace air even better.

What’s it look like?
Badging aside, M35h is essentially identical to the standard M37 and M56, both of which feature flowing lines penned by designer Takashi Nakajima. Infiniti is unique among Japanese premium brands in that it is proud of individual designer accomplishments; Lexus  and Acura rarely, if ever, single out designers when speaking of their work.

And we think Nissan is justified in boasting about Nakajima’s work. While the swoopy design won’t be for everyone, it is both sensuous and seductive from nearly every angle. We especially like the M’s tail and rear three-quarters views, which show off an attractive C-pillar reminiscent of postwar Jaguars. Up front, M’s fascia is a little busy and its nose is a tad droopy, but the bulging fenders are more toned down here than they are on the G.

Unlike the “less is more” trim designs found on German rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the M positively flaunts its curviness like a plus-size model. While that might sound like faint praise, the M35h tips the scales at a fairly modest 4,129 lbs. and it features nearly perfect 51/49 weight distribution. A plumper it ain’t.

And on the inside?
Here’s where Infiniti’s newfound attention to detail is most obvious. A dual-cowl dashboard and a myriad of buttons marks this as an Infiniti product, but the difference is in the… details.

Our tester was optioned up with a $3,800 Deluxe Touring Package, a pricey upgrade that we know we couldn’t live without. Japanese White Ash wood trim adorns nearly every surface. Blessed with enough genuine powdered silver to stir the loins of any prospector among us, the trim is simply ravishing in the way it fades between light and dark surfaces. Add to that luxurious leather trim, a suede-style headliner and a grippy four-spoke steering wheel that rivals anything BMW has to offer and there’s clearly much to like about this interior.

That package also brought with it a so-called Forest Air system that, once the desired interior temperature has been reached, sends additional cold or warm air to passengers in pulses to simulate a breeze you might feel on a nice hike through a forest. Our skepticism nearly got the best of us, but we were pretty impressed with the way it seamlessly distributed air through the cabin.

Above those national park air vents in the center stack sits a big high-resolution display with Infiniti’s standard infotainment software aboard. But a few new screens have arrived to help drivers monitor the hybrid system’s operation. We were most intrigued with a neat EV trip odometer that measures how far drivers have moseyed on solely electric power.

But does it go?
Plug your ears and, yes, Virginia, you might very well be convinced that there’s a V8 under the M35h’s bulbous hood. In fact, you might very well think that a pair of turbochargers are along for the ride, so prodigious is this big four-door’s torque curve.

Power throughout the range is superb, especially in terms of immediate tip-in and mid-range response, the two areas where the electric motor’s instant-on torque really makes its presence known. All this grunt is aided by a snappy-shifting seven-speed automatic. We saw little use for its manual-style gate since it seemed always to be in the right gear, although we did appreciate the sport mode that holds gears longer for aggressive driving.

We were easily able to sustain urban and suburban speeds on electric power alone. Once the battery – which takes up a lot of trunk space – is close to depletion, the gas engine almost silently kicks over. An Eco mode makes it harder to accelerate fast to reduce fuel consumption.

M35h is more than just a straight-line rocket, although it lacks the lithe feel of its G sedan little brother. Steering is light but delivers good, linear response and a neutral feel, something we haven’t felt on some German rivals recently. But the ride is tuned more for comfort, which means the M35h wallows a bit in curves. Grip from the rear wheels – M35hs are rear-drive only, unlike their M37x and M56x showroom-mates – is good, although our tester’s Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires were clearly chosen for their smooth ride and low rolling resistance.

Braking was another strong point. While most hybrids feature what we’d best consider “wooden” brakes thanks to their regenerative systems, the M35h’s four anchors brought things to a stop with minimal drama and a natural feel.

But M35h was best on the open road, where it proved an arrow-straight highway cruiser easily capable of netting 32-33 mpg. Around town, we saw that figure drop to around 28 mpg, although we admit that we probably spent more time trying to up our figures on the car’s EV odometer than we should have. And that’s just what Infiniti wants drivers to do.

Why you would buy it:
You want to have your cake and eat it too. In this case, the dessert is carrot cake. It counts as your vegetable serving, right?

Why you wouldn’t:
If your knees tremble at the scent of eau de diesel, you should probably find something with a three-pointed star.

Leftlane’s bottom line
Infiniti proves that it’s possible to be a hedonist while using a bit less gas with its M35h. As usably fast – and perhaps moreso – than similar four-door luxury sedans that don’t even net 25 mpg on the highway, the M35h is perhaps the first hybrid we’ve ever fallen in love with.

It ain’t cheap and it won’t save the world, but there’s plenty to enjoy about this relatively low guilt sedan.

2012 Infiniti M35h base price, $53,700. As tested, $67,955.
Technology Package, $3,000; Deluxe Touring Package, $3,800; Trunk Mat, $200; Illuminated kick plates, $360; Aerodynamic kit, $2,000; Premium Package, $3,350; 18-inch wheels, $650; Destination, $895.

Infiniti adds first gas-electric hybrid

Infiniti_logo

Luxury brand Infiniti finally joins the gasoline-electric hybrid car market with the 2012 M35h that's rated 38 percent more fuel efficient overall than its non-hybrid, V-6-powered M35 sibling.

Drivers can get 9 more miles from a gallon of gas in city traffic and 6 more miles a gallon on the highway by driving the M35h rather than the regular M35, according to federal government estimates. And the M35h helps prod the driver to meter gasoline via an accelerator pedal that feels like it has a brick behind it whenever a computer in the car determines that the driver isn't being fuel-conscious.

This noticeably firm resistance as the accelerator is being pushed down comes only when the driver has engaged the car's eco mode. And, it's easily overcome with a bit more pushing on the pedal. But a driver can't ignore that some nagging is going on.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, for the 2012 M35h with V-6 and electric motor is $53,595. The government fuel economy rating is 27/32 mpg. That compares with the $48,595 starting retail price for a non-hybrid, V-6 powered, 2012 M35 that's rated at 18/26 mpg.

But the M35h isn't the highest priced M sedan. The 2012 M56 with 420-horsepower V-8 has a $59,995 starting retail price and is not offered in a hybrid version.

Competitors to the M35h include the 210-horsepower Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec sedan, which has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $51,775 as a 2011 model and has a government fuel economy rating of 22/33 mpg as it runs on diesel fuel. Lexus' 2012 HS 250h, which is a luxury gas-electric hybrid sedan, has a starting retail price of $37,030 and had a 2011 rating of 35/34 mpg.

Infiniti Electric Luxury Sedan Confirmed For 2014

Infiniti_electric_car_photo

At his Frankfurt Motor Show press conference, Infiniti VP Shiro Nakamura confirmed they will launch a a compact zero emissions luxury sedan in 2014.

The above sketch shows a silhouette of this yet unnamed luxury EV, revealing a sporty design which according to Infiniti will be a segment leader, just like the M35h which is officially the fastest full Hybrid available, or the new JX that is the first seven-seat crossover.

Here’s the most important bits of Mr. Nakamura’s speech:

"Infiniti plans to take 10 per cent of global luxury segments by 2016*. At today’s levels that would be 500,000 units. That is a giant step up on the number of cars we sold last year. The good news for my team is that we expand our global line-up to 10 models by 2016, so plenty for us to design.

And we come to our first Frankfurt show with our full range of cars and crossovers and a glimpse into the future with the Etherea compact luxury concept.

But we need to tell more people about our story and reach new global audiences. In March we announced our partnership with Red Bull Racing in Formula One, a relationship that is literally delivering rapid results for Infiniti.

We were also proud to have RBR driver and F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel, join with Infiniti as our first ever global brand ambassador. Having a world champion of the caliber of Sebastian has been truly inspiring…and has lead directly to the car we will show you today….."

Infiniti M35h Sets Guinness World Record for the Fastest Hybrid

Infiniti_m35h_guinness_world_record_04

Infiniti already claims the new M35h is the world’s quickest hybrid with a 0-62 mph time of 5.5 seconds. Now the Japanese luxury automaker can add one more performance credential to the car’s list: the Guinness World Record for the fastest hybrid.

The certification was given after auto journalist Tim Pollard of CAR Magazine piloted the luxury hybrid sedan down the 1/4 mile drag course at the UK’s Santa Pod strip, setting an average time between the runs of 13.9031. Pollard’s best run clocked just 13.8960, with all trap speeds above 100 mph.

The M35h is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine making 302-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to an electric motor that adds 67-hp more. Plus, with all this performance, Infiniti claims a 27-mpg city rating and 29-mpg highway.

http://bit.ly/o5TUNG

David, thank you for providing 100 percent customer satisfaction. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.

"Recently (Aug 2011) my wife and I purchased a (2008-2010) Infiniti EX35 Journey. Originating with David Ahn, our sales consultant, following through with the Sales and Finance Managers, our buying experience was exceptional within every stage of the car buying process from the initial greeting - to test driving - to follow-up - to price negotiation – to deal closing – to close-out follow-up. One of the differences between my experience with Parkway Motorcars and other local dealers was that their selling culture was genuinely courteous and sincere, expressing an attitude of gratitude for a new customer relationship that might extend into the future (high customer satisfaction with retention in mind). Yes, their business is to sell cars and maximize profits, which is similar endeavor that extends to other aspects of our lives - to persuade others of our interests and maximize our benefits. However, the negotiation phase was fair, transparent, congenial and compromising. As a buyer, you’ve got to do your homework, communicate an agreeable attitude and present your offer with reasonable justification. It can be a win-win scenario, which means both parties agree to a price."

2013 Infiniti G37 IPL Convertible Confirmed For Production

2013_infiniti_g37_photo
Seeing as Infiniti used last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to roll out its performance-focused branding and the new 2011 G37 IPL Coupe, perhaps it’s fitting  that the company chose this year’s show to announce an IPL-tuned convertible will officially join the lineup for the 2013 model year.

“The Infiniti Performance Line pushes the premium performance envelope for buyers seeking a higher level of exclusivity and driving exhilaration, but does so with an Infiniti twist,” said Ben Poore, Infiniti Americas vice president, in a prepared statement. “The IPL G Convertible will deliver the goods, just like the current IPL G Coupe does — but with the added pleasure of open-air motoring.”

Although we’ve yet to see a production-spec car  in person, the latest addition to the Infiniti Performance Line range will likely be a splitting image of the G37 IPL concept shown at last year’s Paris Motor Show. Predictably, that car was almost the splitting image of the production 2011 G37 IPL coupe, save for the fact it had a folding hardtop roof structure.

If that holds true for the production car, expect the G37 IPL Convertible to receive the same tweaks reserved for its fixed-roof sibling. IPL coupes currently receive a short-throw shifter for manual-transmission cars, tweaked intake and exhaust systems, limited-slip differential, larger 19-inch wheels with stickier rubber, stiffer suspension tuning, upgraded brakes, a unique exterior aero kit, and a revised 3.7-liter capable of delivering 348 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque.

Both delivery timing and pricing will be revealed closer to the car’s official debut, which is scheduled for November’s Los Angeles auto show. But seeing as the standard G37 convertible runs about more than a base G37 coupe, we wouldn’t be too shocked if the G37 IPL convertible carries a similar premium and stickers at close to $57,500.

We’ll learn more when we have a chance to see the IPL convertible concept and speak to Infiniti representatives later this morning. Stay tuned to Automobile  Magazine for the latest news from Pebble Beach.

Infiniti Announces U.S Pricing On 2012 QX And EX Models

Ex_and_qx_prices

Infiniti announced U.S. pricing for the 2012 QX full-size SUV and the 2012 EX crossover. The QX was redesigned in 2011, so changes to the 2012 model are non-existent.

The full-sized SUV will be offered in both a 2WD and 4WD setup, and some options have been changed to make some features more accessible in lower-level packages. One change on the 2012 model is the Blind Spot Intervention system available with the Technology Package. This option alerts the driver to vehicles in the blind spot area. Both the QX models will utilize the 400-hp 5.6-liter V8 mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Pricing for the 2012 2WD model will start at $58,700 and the 2012 4WD model will start at $61,800.

The 2012 EX will be available in four models including the EX35 RWD  ($35,600), EX35 AWD ($37,000), EX35 RWD Journey ($37,900) and EX35 AWD Journey ($39,300). The crossover also gains the HomeLink Universal Transceiver as standard equipment on the EX35 Journey. All four models will utilize the same 297-hp 3.5-liter V6 mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible On Sale Spring 2012

Infiniti_ipl_photo2
Infiniti has finally confirmed that the sultry IPL G Convertible Concept  that we saw late last year will be going into production in time for a sales launch in the spring of next year.

IPL, short for Infiniti Performance Line, is the upmarket Nissan division’s new performance branding, similar to Audi’s S range but not an independently run tuner like BMW M, Mercedes- Benz  AMG or Audi quattro.

The latest announcement about the IPL G Convertible was made this past weekend at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the same event where last year Infiniti first unveiled its IPL G Coupe.

Like the coupe, the new Infiniti IPL G Convertible will feature a Nismo-derived 338 horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine, a seven-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission, larger brakes, a quicker steering ratio, 19-inch wheels, unique interior and exterior trim, and a high-spec, feature-packed interior.

The three-piece retractable roof will remain, but inside, the IPL G Convertible gets a unique red leather-appointed interior as an option.

Look out for the debut of the production 2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show this November.

Infiniti adds to its FX crossover utility

Infiniti_fx_crossover_photo
Infiniti’s FX premium crossover utility vehicle is now in its second generation, competing in an ever-growing field that makes it difficult for any single vehicle to dominate.

Still, for pure driving delight, the FX is a pleaser — especially if you’re among those who value performance over cushiness. The current model arrived for 2009 with more power, more high-tech features and a bolder new design.

Two versions are available: The FX35, with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine; and the FX50, with a 5.0-liter V-8.

For 2011, prices range from $42,600 (plus $895 freight) for the entry FX35 RWD (rear-wheel drive) model to $57,600 for the FX50, which comes only with all-wheel drive. In between is the FX35 AWD ($44,050).

Infiniti has not yet announced 2012 prices, but the ’12 FX will have a few midterm changes when it arrives in October, including a new grille and front fascia design, new dashboard lighting, standard heated front seats on all models and a new “Limited Edition” for the FX35 AWD version.

That model will have special features such as an exclusive Iridium Blue exterior color; 21-inch, 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels; and a hard-drive navigation system with Infiniti’s nifty Around View Monitor.

The FX, which is targeted at men, rides on the rear-drive chassis of the Infiniti G37 sedan. The only Nissan-branded vehicle that uses that architecture is the rear-drive 370Z sports car.

Nissan says FX buyers typically are in their early to mid-40s, married, with household incomes of about $150,000 for the base model and $300,000-plus for the V-8 version.

For this report, we tested the FX35 RWD model. The V-6 engine has all the power anyone really needs, and it also offers the best fuel economy — 16 mpg city/23 highway with two-wheel drive and 16/21 with all-wheel drive.

With the V-8, you get lots more power, of course, but the EPA ratings are 14 city/20 highway. One advantage is that with the V-8, the FX can tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500 pounds; the V-6 is limited to 2,000 pounds, but only the all-wheel-drive model is rated for towing.

On both models, the cabin envelops its occupants in luxury without being ostentatious. Leather seats are standard, with buckets up front and a three-person bench in the rear with a pull-down center divider/armrest that turns it into a comfy two-passenger seat with plenty of legroom.

The intelligent all-wheel-drive system was not included on our tester, but it’s designed for all-weather driving and all road surfaces, wet or dry. It’s not intended for off-road use, however.

There are some cool new high-tech safety features available, including intelligent brake assist, which provide forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. It’s part of the Technology Package ($2,900) for the FX35, though, and was not included on our test vehicle.

Also included in the Technology Package are adaptive headlights, radar cruise control and a lane-departure warning and prevention system that is designed to help keep the vehicle from drifting into adjacent lanes.
