Infiniti Bringing LE Electric Concept Car to New York
Infiniti will reveal an all-electric concept car to the New York auto show, according to The Detroit Bureau. Unlike the Emerg-E concept plug-in hybrid shown in Geneva, the Infiniti LE will reportedly be a battery-powered sedan that shares its mechanical components with the Nissan Leaf.
Last September, Infiniti released a sketch that was said to preview an all-electric car that would bow in 2014. An Infiniti spokesman confirmed that the company would bring an electric concept car to the New York show, but couldn’t provide any more information.
The Detroit Bureau suggests that the LE concept car shown in New York will be very close to the production model’s final design, with styling influenced by the G sedan and coupe models, as well as the new JX crossover. The electric car will be more focused on luxury and performance than the eco-friendly Nissan Leaf.
The concept car’s powertrain will reportedly be shared with that of the Nissan Leaf, although the Infiniti could have a larger battery to improve driving range and acceleration. The Nissan Leaf has an 80-kW electric motor that and a 24-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Both the 2013 Leaf and the Infiniti concept will receive a new 6.6-kW on-board charging system, which can cut battery charging times by half.
Reports suggest the 2013 Nissan Leaf will receive its own set of upgrades, including leather upholstery, darker interior trim, and a more efficient heater than can improve driving range. It’s almost certain that the upgraded heater would be present in Infiniti’s electric car, which should go on sale in 2014.
